600sqft andababy

June 2016

At home with Alison Mazurek, the blogger behind '600sqft and a baby'

Alison and her growing family wanted to stay in the city they loved and decided to make their small 1-bedroom apartment in downtown Vancouver work for them.

She's been documenting every step of it on her blog 600 sqft and a baby, gaining a cult following in the process. In our Insider interview Alison shares the scoop on living small but beautifully, and Little Black Book of her beloved home town.

A bit about yourself:

I am a working mom (project manager in design and construction) who lives with my Husband, Toddler Son and shortly expecting baby #2.

We live in a 600 square foot apartment with high ceilings and lots of windows so that we can stay in the city we love.

We are constantly looking for ways to improve and love our small space and I share our joys and challenges as @600sqftandababy on Instagram and 600sqft.com.

I believe that living with less things is possible even with kids and that living small doesn't mean your space can't be beautiful.

Where you live and who you live with:

We live in Mount Pleasant, a neighborhood just outside of downtown Vancouver, BC with great shops and restaurants and parks all walkable from our condo.

I live with my husband Trevor, our almost 3 year old Theo and expecting a baby girl this July.

Favourite/coolest item in your home:

We couldn't stay in our small space without our Wall Bed by Clei from Resource Furniture. At the time it was a big risk to install a bed in our dining nook but now we forget what it was like before we had it. It allows us to turn our 1 bedroom into a 2 bedroom in the crazy Vancouver real estate market.

While not in our home, living small and within our means led us to buy an 1982 VW Westfalia last year which gets us outside as much as possible. We can't wait for more adventures to come as a family of 4 in Ferdinand the Van.

Fail-safe decorating trick:

In a small space I love white walls and adding colour with plants, warm woods and textiles. Also use as much of your vertical space as you possibly can, with shelving, art and multi-functional (beautiful and useful) items.

First thing you thought of this morning:

I am always thinking about my first cup of coffee... after I hug and kiss my boys of course.

A talent you wish you had:

I wish I could be a bit more mysterious and not show all of my emotions on my face. There is never any doubt as to how I am feeling.

Advice to your younger self:

Try and live in the moment more. Stop analyzing the past and what you did or didn't say or do. And stop worrying about the future. Motherhood if anything has taught me to slow down and be more present.

Favourite band of all times:

oh I am not trendy at all with music, Bon Iver always gets me and I un-apologetically love Kanye.

Your style icon:

Catherine Denueve and Sienna Miller. For Home Style icons I love A Merry Mishap, The Design Chaser and Amber Interiors.

Favourite /least favourite colour:

Favourite Colour is White, least Favourite Colour Orange.

Best way to de-compress:

Glass of Red Wine and Netflix but I also hope to get back running after this pregnancy.

A superpower you wish you had:

hmmm... I feel like I am too much of realist to have given this much thought but flight so I could travel on a whim.

Cats or Dogs:

Dogs, but no plans for a dog anytime soon, our space is full for now!

Alison's Little black book of Vancouver

Coolest thing about Vancouver:

We are only minutes from the beach or the mountains but have all the benefits of a city, like great food, coffee, arts... everything we need.

Where you like to hang out:

We get outside a lot... there are some great parks within a few blocks and we do most of our chores on foot so we are always walking. I love coffee and Theo was essentially raised in our neighbourhood cafes like Elysian and 49th parallel. He is on a first name basis with most of the baristas :)

Favourite restaurant/ bar /café:

Marche St.George a beautiful neighbourhood cafe with delicious crepes, gorgeous home goods and a stash of toys and books to keep kids busy. It is one of our favourite spots to catch up with friends. I also love Pizzeria Farina (for pizza obviously) and never tire of tacos or huaraches from La Taqueria or Sal Y Limon.
